Reliable and effective internal and external communications is critical for safety of life of the crew and passengers during an emergency situation.

The communications group, as part of the section for Nautical safety & Communication systems, is responsible for all issues concerning Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and Internal Communication systems.
As part of classification process, the communication group is responsible for design assessment of the following systems which are required by SOLAS, MODU Code, HSC Code, LSA Code, and DNV Rules for Ships and DNV Offshore Codes:
- GMDSS:
- External communications for distress purposes.
- Position locating devices.
Maritime Safety Information (MSI) receivers.
- Internal Communication systems:
- Public Address (PA).
- General Alarm (GA).
- Internal two-way voice communication.
