Purpose

Ship design scenario analyses identify improvement options with the aim of making your ships commercially robust in terms of operations in varying market conditions and under future environmental regulatory changes.

Benefits

DNV provides advice with respect to assessment of proposed ship designs by applying a scenario analysis approach. The search for improvement options is particularly focusing on energy efficiency and environmental performance, but may be configured to also address other targets.

In a market where bunker prices fluctuate, market demands are uncertain and new environmental regulatory taxes are introduced, changes in operating costs are difficult to predict. We model these factors based on scenarios defined in co-operation with your company, and find improvement potentials related to for instance:

  • Identifying relevant emission reduction methods
  • Performing conceptual design reviews evaluating effect of changes in propulsion system or other main equipment groups
  • Evaluating capacity adjustments of the fleet to reduce costs and increase revenue

Our approach

Building on our benchmarking service, your design is measured on energy efficiency and environmental performance against a set of reference vessels in your own or the world fleet.

Based on this assessment, DNV will guide you in evaluating alternative scenarios to improve your competitiveness in the market. Focus is on operating costs and emissions; scenario analyses look at variations in different parameters with associated cost/benefit figures. Typical examples are:

  • Speed optimisation in a transport route setting
  • Transport capacity
  • Engine/fuel type alternatives, cost/benefit of solutions
  • Technical improvements related to emission reductions or increased efficiency
  • Overall fuel efficiency

The scenario review is carried out using the DNV assessment methodology in close cooperation with the customers, using as much real data / measured results and performance parameters as may be available from the customers’ operations.
